Chinese Apartments

The majority of Chinese live in apartments. They don’t have houses like we do in the US. There are houses throughout the country. There was a small area in the New District in Luoyang that had some kind of houses. There is a wall around them so I couldn’t see them very well. I saw some of the second floor and the roof. I was told that they are very expensive and are like western houses.

The first time that I was in Luoyang, most everyone that I knew had small apartments just like what I lived in at the school. The apartment buildings were usually six stories high. The second time I was there, many of my friends were in new ones that were much nicer and bigger.

The new apartment buildings were up to thirty-two floors. They were 1400-1500 square feet. They buy the apartment and decorate it themselves. They do not come furnished. They had two bedrooms, sometimes there was a computer room, also a big living room, bathroom, a place for a wash machine, nice kitchen and dining area. They also had enclosed balconies.

There were stand-up heaters/AC units in the living room and other rooms. I remember that the one in the living room was about five feet tall or more, not sure about the ones in the other rooms. During the winter, the city would heat those apartments. The people living in the apartments had to pay for that of course. The heaters were the radiator kind where warm water ran through them, similar to what we used to have in schools and buildings in the US but these were different and very efficient. These were in every room in the apartment. The whole apartment was warm everywhere so that each room was the same. I suppose it would be like our central heating. This heating system was turned on starting November 1st and turned off March 1st. It was used just during those four months. Otherwise if it was cold before or after that, they would use the stand up heaters in their apartments. A big change during the six years that I was gone.

Chapter 60
Apartments

There are all kinds of apartments of course. Most of these pictures are of my friend’s apartments. The apartments that I saw were usually 140-150 square meters (1500-1600 square feet). They are very nice. They have, what I would call, a stand-up heater/air conditioner in a corner. There was a bigger one in the living room and smaller ones in other rooms. There were also radiators in the rooms. From November 1st until March 1st, the city would pump hot water to all of the apartment buildings and that is how they were heated for those four months. It was a very nice even heat throughout the apartment. The owners paid for that of course. During the other months when the weather was cool, the stand-up heaters were used. I put a lot of pictures here so you can see the different kinds of apartments and give you an idea of what they look like.

The first seven pictures are what I would call an exceptional apartment. One of my friends knew the people that owns this place. It is the only one that I saw like this.
