Chapter 2 - How Big is China? Where is Luoyang?

I am going to explain some things. When you think of China, you have to think of people, numbers of people. I got so tired of people saying that China is so big. If I would have told them that the U.S. is bigger, I’m sure they wouldn’t have liked it. This is how it is, if you consider the land area of both countries, then the US is bigger. If you add the water, then China is bigger. The U.S. has 3.79 million sq. miles of land area. China has 3.7. That’s all the difference there is.

The reason that everyone thinks China is so big is because there are so many people. China has four times as many people as the U.S. China has as many children as the U.S. has people. In Luoyang and the districts, there were 6.5 million people in 2010. The city itself was around 1.5 million people and the rest were in the districts.

Luoyang is in Henan Province, the most populated province in China. It is in east central China. Henan and the state of Wisconsin are almost the same size. Wisconsin has 5.5 million people and Henan has 100 million. Almost sixteen times as many people in the same area. La Crosse has 51,000 people.

If La Crosse was in China, it would have almost one million people. Onalaska has 18,000 people, there would be about 360,000 if it was in China. If Henan Province was a country, it would be the 12th largest country in the world.

Luoyang is 435 miles inland from the East China Sea. If you go straight east from Luoyang to the East China Sea you will reach the city of Lianyungang and a little ways to the east of the city is the East China Sea. If Luoyang was in the US, it would be on a latitude just north of Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is 33.75 N, Luoyang is 34.66 N. Luoyang is 500 miles SW of Beijing, 234 miles east of Xi’an where the Terracotta Warriors are and 120 miles west of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province.

During my years in Luoyang there would be anywhere from 100-340 foreigners in Luoyang. That’s not many when you have millions of people in the city. I don’t know how many Americans there were. At one point, there were 60 teachers from different countries, maybe the others were working at other jobs or visiting.

As of January 2016, the population of Luoyang is 6,962,300 people. This includes the city and the six surrounding districts. The population of the city itself is 1,955,200. The districts of Luoyang are; Jianxi, Xigong, Laocheng, Chanhe, Luolong and Jili.

The city of Luoyang enjoys a pre-eminent reputation as a cradle of Chinese civilization. For over 4,000 years, it served as the capital city of thirteen different Chinese kingdoms including the first, the Xia Dynasty (21st-16th century B.C.). The city is thus endowed with countless historical sites and cultural treasures.
